A Little Fall Home Maintenance

Fall in Kansas has a way of reminding us that winter is coming, sometimes all in the same week. Before the cold settles in, take a walk around the house and see what needs attention.

Clear the leaves from your gutters, disconnect the garden hoses, and check for loose shingles or gaps around windows and doors. If you have a sprinkler system, make sure it’s winterized before the first hard freeze.

Inside, change the furnace filter, test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and make sure the heat is ready when you need it. This is also a good time to clean the dryer vent and, if you use your fireplace, have the chimney checked.

None of these jobs is especially exciting, but taking care of a few small things now can save you an expensive surprise later.
